I was walking around with my daughter, noticing all the shadows from the trees and thought they were really cool. I came home, got my daughter, my camera and a piece of wax paper. These photos are what came out of that. I thought they were really cool, she hated the red lips.

I mean I grew up in the age of pinball machines and life was easy then. Danielle and Josh you guys are awesome, I can't wait for your wedding. Hope Washington is treating you right.

Fish tacos and photo tips

Tonight was fish tacos. Sometimes it's just wine. Sometimes I just can't take making another meal. Breakfast, lunch, dinner I get over it. But I do believe in the family dinner.

So back to the tacos.

I usually use Cod, Talapia or Catfish. Use whatever you like. You can also make this dish with hamburger, add cheese, or chicken, no cheese. The tip with chicken is Lawry's seasoning salt. Get the fish breading in the fish department, bread and fry your fish. While the fish is frying you can cut up cilantro, jalapenos and Serranos. Put them in dishes. Then make the coleslaw. Buy pre-made coleslaw and mix with a little mayo and some lemon. Put all those things on the table. I like to use a bunch of different hot sauces and salsas. Get soft corn tortillas and warm them up. Then serve. It is easy, fast and delicious. I usually eat way more than I should, but that's the mid western girl in me. Big families, fear of not having enough food. Like I said I love food. So eat and enjoy.

Now a photo tip. When taking a portrait people generally try and turn their subjects so there face is towards the sun. The problem with that is that they squint, have shadows under the eyes and generally are unhappy because they can't see. The trick is this. Turn them around. The sun will be out of their eyes, you will get a great hair light and everyone will be happy. And you must put your flash on for a fill light. If you forget the flash, the face will be underexposed. That is key in this lighting situation. Try it and see. Let me know how it worked out.

Daily recipe and photo fun

Today I am working on a couture dress made entirely from recycled stuff from Resource in Boulder. I will be having a show of some of my fashion work on May 13th at Boulder Blooms on the hill. Please come. Jerrica Park, florist extraordinaire and I decided to have some fun first. We wanted to shoot a few more models with a floral theme and decided to use the recycled product for our outfits. So far so good. Although sewing window screening into a gown is a little dangerous. Lots of holes in my fingers. But we are having a blast and I can't wait to shoot the dresses. I'll post them when we are done.

Now for my recipe of the day. This is for busy moms who are somewhat health conscious but busy to boot.

Hamburger pie.

2 lbs of hamburger

1 small bag frozen mixed vegetables

2 cans beef gravy

mashed potatoes-you can use instant or I make my own.

brown the hamburger and drain. mix in the frozen veggies and the gravy and mix well.

put the mixture into a baking dish

top with the mashed potatoes, usually about 4-6 cups, I usually wing it

bake at 350 for one hour.

The kids love this and it is dairy free if you make the mashed potatoes with olive oil and water.

Very yummy.

Today I decided to run with my little point and shoot. One thing I always notice on my runs is the beautiful colors. The blue of the sky, the yellow hue of the tall grass, it always takes my breath away. There is something about being outside that opens you up. I feel like it allows the collective stuff to float through my being. I can still my mind and open my heart to all that is good around us. I kept thinking about this need to rush around everywhere, and today I wondered what am I rushing towards. My death? What about all the things in between now and then? I never want to forget to go slow and enjoy the now. I do a lot. But when I am out running or mountain biking, I remember the now. Go out and breath the air. Or very simply, just breath. Life is so important to live, not to just manage. Then I started thinking about last night. The wind was blowing and I kept hearing this thumping against my bedroom wall. It was driving me crazy and I knew that I would fixate on the sound and never get to sleep. I went downstairs to see if any windows were open, I checked out front to make sure all the gates were closed and went into the backyard to see if any of the chairs were hitting the house. Nothing, not one thing. And the banging continued. Then I started thinking about ghosts and freaked myself out completely. Not that I believe in Ghosts but I couldn't find any other reason for the banging. I was progressively getting more freaked out. I finally fell asleep and first thing this morning I went outside to see what it was. I am telling you NOTHING. I couldn't find one thing that would be hitting the house like that. Now I have to move. I will probably never sleep again.

Me and my dog Willy. My other most lovely dog, Hoss has finally given up. He is almost 13 and his poor hips just don't work anymore. He still has the power to guilt me out but that's about it. He just stares at me as I climb in the car with my other dog. Sorry Hoss.

Met up with my friends Shaun and Tim from iSupportU. They are having their ribbon cutting/grand opening today at 4pm. I'm sure they would love to meet you and more importantly you will love meeting them. If you need any computer help, anything, these are the guys to go to. Their new shop is on 18th and Pearl. And they have beer.

I walked into this Pearl street book shop and fell in love. What Chaos. I love it. And he had a fake black crow on his desk just like me.

Recipes and other such things.

Everyone I know keeps telling me to blog. Blog, blog, blog. I keep trying. Today I went on a much needed run, so good for my mind, so hard on my body, and took some great photos of the view. The sky was an amazing blue, the tall grass was golden and brown and the wind was blowing everything in perfect harmony. The photos are great. I wish I could share them. I can't figure out how to get them from my phone to this computer. So just close your eyes, and for a moment see what I saw in your minds eye. I am always amazed at the beauty around us. It is everywhere you turn, if you are looking. I think so many of us are rushing here and rushing there, we miss out on what is actually in front of us. Stop, behold and breath. I am telling you I finished my run with joy in my heart.

Now I figured there is one thing I can always talk about and therefore blog about. Food. I love food. I love to eat it. I love to think about it and I love to cook it. So I am going to share some of my favorite recipes on a weekly basis and I would love to hear what you think about them.

My obsession with Cottonwoods

I was once again wandering around admiring the cottonwoods. I was thinking about what is so intriguing about them and why I am so fascinated with them. It is their strength. They have stood their ground, been battered and hammered by weather, things have been built around them and into them and their roots have been cut. And yet they stand so strong. So unmoved by all of it. That is what I aspire to be like. To let all of life's things, wash and move over me as I stand, strong and free of what is piled upon me. To keep the strength I have found in myself, unchanged by all that touches me.

I really love shooting boudoir photographs. What I like best about it is each woman's ability to let go and express in their own unique way. I don't think it is easy to let go and be naked and feel safe in front of someone so for me it is really powerful to see it when it happens. I often feel in our sort of repressed society that we are not allowed to have sexual expression, that there is something wrong with it. But people are so beautiful and wonderful it is awesome to see them in this new light.

When I first met Ashley, we had such a great connection. She's really down to earth, but she's also a lot of fun and up for anything! As we got to talking, she showed me a picture of her dress and I immediately thought of some fun ideas. I thought how cool it would be to use an old window as a frame for her, while she's wearing her dress, with the Garden of the Gods in the background. So off I went in search of windows. Flea market shopping is one of my favorite things to do. I love the history of old objects. I found the windows and a cool vintage umbrella that I brought along. I always try to give my couples something unique. I also always challenge myself to never shoot the same way twice. I feel it is really important to get to know the couple and then shoot the story of who they are ,while also creating some beautiful art pieces for them.

David had a really cool vintage phone app on his Droid that I need to get. It was really amazing what this app could do. I've spent years in a darkroom trying to do just what it does. Technology is amazing and baffling.

Their families were awesome. I always look forward to getting to know them. It seems as if we often forge strong bonds through being together throughout these amazing, transitional moments.
The older I get, the more I really appreciate the connections that I make through my work. Life is so short, and to have an inside view into a couple's life together, even if only for a moment, is absolutely a gift. Thank you.

A day of shooting abstract

I have always had a love of landscape. When I first started photography, that is all that I shot. I am so intrigued by the things made naturally and the things that are man made and mix with the natural environment. I love that an old Cottonwood tree was wanted, yet to make room for mankind, it had to be split for some telephone wires. It stands strong, unmoved by the split. That is so powerful to me. I also really love to experiment with the abstract. To look at something and wonder what it really is. Again, that feels like looking into someone. Who are they really. I am always fascinated by myself. By all the things I convince myself are true about myself. And I know that being a photographer I am always looking in, into people themselves, and into things. I am so interested in the story of each person and of things left to be. Why is a person the way they are. What beliefs do they hold? Why did someone leave that old building? Who lived in it? What was the story? Life is so full of stories. I guess that is why I like to tell them with my camera.

Today I was visiting with a friend and we started talking about trees and our shared love of trees. I have always been so in love with the giant cottonwoods that are all over Colorado. They represent strength and perseverance to me. I love that they have withstood the passage of time and I wonder if they could talk, what would they say, what have they seen? As you can see I have been quite busy. The economy has put a damper on some parts of my work, but opened many much awaited for doors in other directions. I think after all these years of raising children and attending to my family I have finally had some freedom to go forth with what I have always wanted to do-my art. I hope you enjoy the photos and I put some amazing qoutes at the end of the photos. Well they were at the top here, but somehow made it to the bottom. Enjoy.

Modern Day Eve

Okay so I am an avid reader. I love to read history books. Strange I know, who would guess. I've become obsessed with the stories of the women behind the men. Eve and Adam. Mary and Jesus. Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln. What keeps standing out to me in all these books I read is how women have been repressed. Never allowed to fully be who they are or that they are who they are because of a man. And what they have suffered because of men. I don't hate men, I love them. But why have women been so shut down? They seem different they are burned at the stake, or stuck in a mental institution. It seems so unfair to me. So on one of my runs these ideas started popping into my head. Modern day Eve. Why was she made from the rib of a man? Why couldn't she stand on her own and be woman on her own I'm not claiming to be knowledgeable about the bible, but this was my interpretation of Eve. Instead of being given a rib from Adam, she is showing us she doesn't need it. She is eating Adam's rib. The apple gag in the mouth was more about her being silenced as a woman. And then I started thinking about gluttony- modern day - anorexia.

I love when kids are being kids. Just look at them go. Give them an inch and they take a beautiful mile.

I really love to shoot family portraits. I love to watch all the typical family stuff that goes on. The baby is being forced in to places and postions it does not want to be in. Look at the crabby face. Who can blame him. His brother is running around doing what he does and moms and dads are hoping for a few good shots. I love that all familys are the same in this. It is what it is.

Many Musings

This posting is of a family whose mother I've known for a long time. My friend Chris and her fiancee Bud, recently adopted two beautiful children from Ethiopia. Chris has wanted to be a mother for quite some time and I'm so happy for her to have finally realized her dream.

The story of these kids is truly amazing and profoundly moving. Their biological mother had nine children. Three of them died of malnutrition. Then her husband passed away and the mother could no longer care for her two smallest children. So she gave them up to be cared for. My friends and I have wondered if we could do the same thing if we were in her shoes. What an incredible act of love. To give up a child or children so that they could live and possibly never see them again. To me that is the most noble decision anyone could make. So on the day I showed up to take these pictures I didn't really know what to expect. Would they understand me with the language barrier? Would they be albe to relate to me and my camera? It was so much more than I expected. I think I would feel right in saying, I felt honored, to be in the presence of this story. It felt like a gift that had been given to me. Chris and Bud did such an awesome job of bonding with the kids. They looked for their new mother when they were unsure, and always came around for hugs. Sometimes I would see them standing there with these expressions of, "how did I get here, what is going on"? and then two seconds later they would be running and frolicking and just being silly. It was like a miracle at work, right before my eyes. We should all aspire to be this way. I'm sure there have been challenges, but who they were, at that moment, in their moment, was beautiful. It has inspired me to be a bigger part of these families lives. To document their personal stories. It is too powerful not to. The stories must be told so the memories can be laid down, forever. I hope you enjoy the photos.

Becoming Woman

This is a series about women. I loved the idea of something abstract and a lot of these shots were shot through different types of fabrics. Some were edited in photoshop most not. I shot a lot of them out of focus to get the real abstract feel. I also love the mask, as I feel it represents the true self we hide.

Bridal portraits. This is something I am adding to my repetoire of things. Bridal Fashion shoots. It's hard to get it all done on a wedding day, so I'm offering pre or post wedding fashion shoots.

The Zimmermans. These guys were great. She is an artist and he is a money guy. They wanted something different and I love that freedom of creativity.

Casey and Kevin. We had so much fun on this photo shoot. Their personalities are so different and we really wanted to show that, which is how we came up with all these fun ideas.

These are some photos from the series I've been working on, "Innocence Lost". My idea came about from watching my 11 year old daughter as she went from trying on make-up to playing with her dolls. It's about the beauty of growing up, and the ultimate, death or loss of innocence.

My parent's 50th wedding anniversary

So here we are at my parent's 50th wedding anniversary celebration. As you can see my mother was completely suprised. My older brother Paul really did such an excellent job creating this memory for them. We surprised them at the local baseball team's game. We had clues all over my home town of Midland Michigan, which my parents had to discover. This led them to the field of friends and family.My Parents threw out the opening pitch.

These are all my relatives. As you can see there is some serious mental instability.This is my sweet 98 year old grandmother and my Aunt NancyAgain, it's amazing we all surrvived our childhood realitively okay.I'm not sure who this guy is, but my mom seems to like him.These are some of the cousins and family I love so much.Here is my mom upon entering the ball field. She had no idea.This is our 2010 family portrait I set up at the cabin we stayed in, in Cadillac Mi. I have been collecting all these vintage dresses so we did it up.

Look at my 11 year old. I can't believe it! I had a model set up for this shoot and she cancelled at the last minute so my daughter stepped up. It was so strange seeing this little girl trying to look adult. Scary. I got the idea for this shoot from a website I saw and the designer made everything out of recycled stuff he found. This dress was made from window screening, tulle and many other little things I found.

I've had these ideas floating around my head for some time. I'm not really sure where they came from, they appeared in my head on one of my daily runs. But I was thinking about how we evolve as people and human beings. We are birthed, then we grow and mature, and then when we hit our middle ages, yes I am there, we are re-birthed in a way. I guess if you take the time to do the work on yourself, then you are. We are free once again from the daily hauntings of who and what we are and what we are doing here. The other part of the shoot I was thinking about how tightly we keep ourselves wrapped in our own little secrets. That's where these were inspired from. And a big thanks to my model and friend Monica who will do any crazy idea that pops into my skull. Thanks girl.

This was the best New Year's eve wedding. Michelle and Mike were so laid back and sooo colorful. I was lucky enough to work with Ross of Elegant images and his photos were awesome.
Michelle is one of the girls from the Vain Hair Salon in Denver that I do a lot of work with. I'm thrilled she chose me to capture her day. Their little girl Maybe was just the most unique little girl I have ever seen. She kept things rolling for sure. And during the ceremony that was so sweet and powerful, there wasn't a dry eye. Congrats!

This is my beautiful friend Erin. I am a lover of vintage clothing, I don't wear it, but I love it and I found all these cool 1960's dresses that fit her to a t. My mom also loves to collect vintage and sent me these 1950's dresses and the bathing suit belongs to my 98 year old grandmother. We have many more dresses and hairdos to go so keep yourself posted.

I wanted to wish you all a very happy holiday. Here are some portraits from the good ole self timer. I'm broken hearted to see that I actually don't look like the 18 year old I feel like. I guess there is some plastic surgery in my future. Or perhaps I'll just age gracefully like an old turnip. I can't believe my kids are 8 and 10 already. Where does the time go. It is passing by so quickly. My Holiday wish to you all is that you stop to take the time to smell the roses, to see the sights and enjoy just being. Life can pass you up in a minute so participate fully in all that you are and love passionately all that you have. Give yourself completely . These Cottonwood trees have been an interest of mine for a long time. In the summer months they are so beautiful and green, but in the winter they take on this old, mysterious vibe. They seem so grand, and full of history. If only they could talk, I wonder what they would say.

I'm going to post a lot of stuff that should have been up ages ago. This here is beautiful Logan. We did some great senior photos at her mom and dad's shack up near Chataqua. Not only was she beautiful and fun to work with but her whole family was amazing.
